The Helge Ederstrom papers consist of materials related mainly to the history of the Physiology and Pharmacology Departments at the University of North Dakota from 1905 until 1983. Subjects documented include the use of the new Medical Science building, the usage of animals for research, controversies in the Graduate Program, and advances of technology. There is a timeline of the teachers and courses in the Physiology and Pharmacology departments from 1915- 1980, and a listing of course changes over the years. Also included in the collection are the notes and rough drafts that Ederstrom used to write A History of the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, 1905-1977.

Helge Ellis Ederstrom was born on February 28, 1908, in Torsas, Sweden, to Herman and Alma Ederstrom. He received his B.S. from Beloit College(Wisconsin) in 1937. After he received his M.S. and Ph.D. from Northwestern University in Chicago, he taught there and at the medical schools at the University of Missouri(1942-1947) and St. Louis University(1947-1952).
